USU Sponsored Programs Director Accepts New Position at UNLV

David Paul, director of USU’s Sponsored Programs Office, will leave USU Oct. 30 to direct sponsored programs at the University of Las Vegas.  Sponsored Programs Assistant Director Jeff Coleman will assume Paul’s responsibilities as interim director.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at USU, and my success is directly attributable to those people who I have worked with, both within the Research Office and across campus,” said Paul.  “I have especially appreciated interacting with the faculty members who perform the cutting-edge research we are here to support.”

Paul has worked in SPO since 2003, first as a senior contract administrator and then as the assistant director.  He was named director in 2006.  Before coming to USU, Paul worked in the financial division of corporate and government entities, including the Office of Naval Research in Seattle, Wash.

“David has been an exemplary director these past three years,” said Jeff Broadbent, associate vice president for research.  “Thanks to his initiative, several major milestones and improvements have occurred at SPO during his tenure.”

Sponsored Programs staff members have focused on building relationships between SPO and the campus community.  Faculty better understand that SPO is an important resource available to support their research, and not a policing entity, said Paul.

Educational and training opportunities in proposal writing and grant management have greatly increased over the past few years, and many policies have been established or revised to improve compliance in the areas of extra compensation, gift classification, fixed price residuals, cost sharing, and F&A waivers.

“We wish David well in his new position at UNLV,” said Broadbent.  “At the same time, we are confident in the direction he has established for USU Sponsored Programs, and we expect that positive momentum to continue in the years to come.”

The Sponsored Programs Office at USU supports researchers as they propose, submit and administer externally sponsored research projects on and off campus by processing proposals, conducting negotiations, helping researchers find and obtain funding and playing an important role in contract administration.
