Influenza, bird flu, mad cow disease, West Nile virus, and potential bioterrorism viruses are of great concern worldwide. Discoveries are being made at USU and elsewhere involving treatment of these infectious diseases. More specifically, based on work done at USU, a new drug is in clinical trials that might emerge as the leading treatment for influenza and bird flu, and innovative therapeutic studies are being conducted to treat prion diseases (mad cow disease). A new drug also is being tested at USU for the treatment of bioterrorism viruses causing hemorrhagic disease, and a new drug is in clinical trials for the treatment of West Nile virus neurological disease.
