The Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) is the oldest and one of the most successful of the 54 university-based water research centers in the country. The key mission of the UWRL is to conduct applied research on Utah’s water resources problems. This research has led to the development of ion-selective instrumentation to better measure salt loading in streams and rivers, use of unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAVs) to inexpensively acquire remotely sensed data for better management of canals and reservoirs, development of software so irrigation system managers can use satellite data to anticipate future requirements for reservoir releases and canal diversions, and development of longterm predictors of water availability. Some of these research projects have produced patents that will result in business opportunities in Utah, especially in the environmental sensor area.
