what we care about
Because public land in Utah is so diverse, different areas require different types of study. This was the goal of Phase 1 of the socioeconomic baseline study, in which USU researchers identified key areas of concern to local and state officials. They then identified five major areas of study for Phase 2 of the project. These five areas include:
1. General population study – Links between Utah’s population and uses of public land areas for both commercial and recreation purposes.
2. Grazing Study – The dependency livestock operators have on public land grazing and the links between livestock operators and local and regional economies.
3. Off Highway Vehicle study – Existing use patterns of Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) owners as well as the local and regional impacts of their expenditures related to recreational use of OHVs, and potential impacts of changes in public land access for OHV use.
4. Watershed Management Study – Links between watershed management, water production from public lands, and local communities and regions in Utah.
5. Wild and Scenic Rivers Study – Impacts on recreation and traditional uses of designated river segments on local and regional communities.
