Research Matters
Since its establishment in 1888 as Utah's only
land-grant institution, Utah State University
has never lost sight of its unique research mission-
sharing discoveries from the campus with
the citizens of the state. In the 1800s, USU shared
mostly agricultural research results with farmers
and ranchers. Today, our mission is so much
more.
In this year's edition of Research Matters, you'll read about new ways USU researchers are providing resources, advice, and practical knowhow to people throughout Utah and around the world. These researchers, nominated by the dean in each college, represent some of the best that Utah State has to offer. From creating small business strategies to demonstrating "smart-growth" planning techniques and developing new 3-D technologies, USU researchers are touching literally every county in Utah.
In today's world, USU is changing to best serve the state's need for a vibrant and strong economy with an abundance of high-paying jobs. The Utah Science, Technology and Research (USTAR) economic development initiative, an investment to strengthen our research capacity, will help facilitate this progress by creating even more direct linkages between USU research innovations and the state's future entrepreneurs and high-tech employees.
We recognize the importance of research at Utah State University and its profound benefits to the people of our state and beyond. We are committed to leading Utah into the next generation of growth, and we invite you to do the same. We appreciate your interest in and support of Utah State University. Best regards,

Brent C. Miller, Ph.D
