The Focus of Research
It can be hard to stay focused on what’s important and prioritize the things that matter most.
Fortunately, we’ve had a lot of practice focusing and prioritizing at Utah State University. We’ve been focused on our land-grant mandate since 1888, and our priorities have been built around student learning, discovery of practical knowledge, and community engagement. Because of this, Utah State is not an ivory tower; USU’s focus and priorities can help cushion the state from economic stagnation and position us to ride the next wave of prosperity.
USU’s focus on research has created dividends that exceed the typical return. No other investment carries the promise of preparing the talented workforce of tomorrow by creating new high tech jobs and companies, all the while addressing issues of health, accessibility, and sustainability.
In this new issue of Research Matters, you’ll read about some of the ways we are supporting undergraduate students through Research Fellowships, valuable faculty interactions, and even nutrition assistance to help them avoid the “Freshman 15.” You’ll also learn how USU researchers are assisting the state and nation by providing universal access to the Internet, creating detailed images of the state with unprecedented detail, and ensuring that women can advance in science and engineering careers. You’ll also see imaginative possibilities for the future, with autonomous robotic technology and internal initiatives to significantly increase external funding for faculty research.
There are many uncertainties now and in the years ahead, but it is certain that USU and other research universities are vital to a thriving, high-tech economy. At USU we are focused on educating Utah students for tomorrow, creating new discoveries, and making tangible impacts today.
Best regards,
