Guidelines and Terms

Office of Research start-up funding is intended to specifically support costs for the research, scholarship, or creative activities of faculty (as contrasted with office supplies and furniture, teaching materials, etc). Up to half of the new faculty member’s start-up costs will be considered for support by the Office of Research for new faculty hires with a research assignment of 45% or greater. For faculty with less than 45% research appointment, the amount provided will be proportional to the role statement weighting for research, scholarship, or creative activity (e.g. 25% funding support can be provided from the Office of Research for faculty with 25% role assignment for research). Faculty members receiving new faculty startup funds are required to attend the Write Winning Grant Proposals seminar and complete the Research Financial Administration Series Training (RFAST) within the first year of hiring. Visit Workshops and Seminars for information about the seminar and Research Development for RFAST information.

Equipment/Post-Doctoral Researcher funds – The Research Office contributions to the Equipment/Post-Doctoral Researcher portion of the new faculty start-up will be paid in three installments. The first installment when the faculty member is hired at USU, the second installment will be transferred at the start of the next fiscal year, and the third installment will be transferred at the start of the third fiscal year. The Research Office will provide funding for the items listed above only; it will be the responsibility of the Faculty member and/or the Department to fund ongoing equipment O&M expenditures.

Graduate Research Assistantship funds – The Research Office will hold the funds for graduate research assistantships centrally, and the use of these funds will be coordinated with the Office of Research Finance Officer. These funds will be made available when the research assistant has been hired. These funds cannot be used for tuition or fees; they can only be used to pay the student and cover subsidized graduate student health insurance. The Office of Research will support up to three years of graduate student support, but the funds must be used by the end of the third fiscal year – no extensions allowed. Departments are encouraged to preselect graduate students for new faculty with graduate research assistantships in their start-up package.

At the end of the third fiscal year, any unused funds from the Office of Research will be pulled back and no longer available to the faculty member.
