The Laboratory Animal Research Center is staffed by trained personnel. When an investigator has a particular request for utilizing the Center and its equipment, he/she should first contact the Supervisor, located in LARC 242 (Ext. 7-1886). The investigator may be assured that every effort will be made to meet his/her requests. However, the Supervisor requires a reasonable period of time and adequate information in order to coordinate the Center and its equipment.

The following services are provided by the Center:

  • Procurement of laboratory animals
  • Procurement of feed, bedding, cages, animal care, equipment and supplies
  • Care and husbandry of animals housed within the Center
  • Cleaning, washing and sanitation of cages and equipment
  • Instruction in proper methods of animal handling, restraint and experimental manipulation
  • Laboratory animal caretaker training
  • Euthanasia of animals
  • Carcass disposal (non-radioactive only) through the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab
  • Animal health and disease diagnosis in cooperation with the Veterinary Science Department
  • Animal records and information
  • Consolation

The LARC is open to investigators daily, Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Special arrangements may be made for access to the building during evening, weekends or holidays.
