Contract Fermentation and Manufacturing Services

Located on Utah State University’s Innovation Campus, the USU Synthetic Biomanufacturing Facility is designed and staffed to optimize large-scale development and production of bioproducts and raw cell material. The facility provides production capabilities for university faculty, researchers and students as well as private industries through state-of-the-art equipment and technical support, including a world-class fermentation facility.

A primary purpose of the fermentation lab is to generate substantial quantities of biomolecules for commercialization and scale-up performance evaluation. The capabilities of this facility enable scale-up optimization of fermentation bioproducts that can be grown and analyzed under a variety of growth conditions for maximum product yield and quality. Lab design also allows room to add additional equipment as demand increases.

Available for contract manufacturing and equipment use, the Synthetic Biomanufacturing Facility offers a range of lab to pilot scale fermenters for process development, testing and production. Two New Brunswick BioFlo Pro 400 liter fermentors allow process optimization with a variety of setup options and data collection resources. A 100 liter New Brunswick BioFlo 610 fermentation system, which is also steam-in-place capable and fully automated, is available as a stand-alone or seed reactor. For cell and product recovery, several sizes of centrifuges and tangential flow filtration devices are available.

Previously associated with the Synthetic Biomanufacturing Institute (SBI) and named the Bioproducts Laboratory (BPL), the Synthetic Biomanufacturing Facility is a contract manufacturing organization (CMO) and bioprocess demonstration facility under the Office of Research at Utah State University. Working closely with Utah State University’s Center for Integrated Biotechnology (CIB) and Technology Transfer Services, the Synthetic Biomanufacturing Facility specializes in:

Utah Science Technology and Research (USTAR) professor Dr. Randy Lewis and his team at Utah State University were the first to successfully clone all six spider silk genes, enabling the development of several different synthetic spider silk proteins, each with varying characteristics of strength and elasticity.

The creation of these spider silk proteins, along with proprietary production processes, makes mass production of synthetic spider silk a reality and allows it to be applied within a number of industries.

V.Sridhar (Sri) has 20 years experience in microbial fermentation-based products including bacterial, fungal, actinomycetes and yeast fermentation. In addition, he managed cGMP manufacturing in a FDA-compliant facility for 9 years and has experience with 1 to 4 million liter-capacity fermenters.

Sri holds two master’s degrees, specializing in technology, biotechnology, biochemical engineering, fermentation technology, industrial biotechnology and biochemistry.

With Sri’s experience, the Synthetic Biomanufacturing Facility at Utah State University is prepared to work with you to develop and scale-up products for commercial manufacturing. Sri has specific experience with commercializing:
