Student Spotlight: Matt Armbrust

Matt Armbrust
Majors: Biological Engineering and Biochemistry
Mentor: Dr. Ryan Jackson

Matt Armbrust is a dual major student in Biological Engineering and Biochemistry. Coming from Carlsbad, CA, he discovered USU had the research and major programs he was looking for and was a “good fit all around.” In his free time, Matt likes to stay active and enjoys weight lifting, basketball, hiking, and spending time with friends.

His research focuses on how bacteria adapt to their environment and how bacteria respond to infections or viruses. He also studies the CRISPR gene, learning more about how it works and its uses under the direction of his mentor Dr. Ryan Jackson. He plans on using this knowledge as a future doctor, and is planning on applying for and attending medical school in the future.

His advice to future student researchers is to get involved and talk to your professors. In his experience, talking to your professors about research opportunities can lead to research involvement.
