Mitchell Westmoreland’s research focuses on plant-environment interactions of high-value crops using controlled environments. He aims to advance fundamental knowledge of plant physiology and provide evidence-based approaches to improve the sustainability and efficiency of controlled environment agriculture. Westmoreland has published five peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals. His 2021 publication on the photobiology of cannabinoid synthesis and the efficiency of electric lighting for indoor agriculture has been cited more than 30 times. Westmoreland has been an invited speaker at six national conferences, including two academic conferences at the University of Connecticut and Colorado State University Pueblo. He has presented his research at eight national academic conferences. In 2023, Westmoreland was awarded first place among 20 graduate students for his lightning talk at a national conference on controlled environment agriculture. He has received seven fellowships, including the Bertrand D. Tanner/Campbell Scientific Graduate Fellowship and Apogee Instruments/Campbell Scientific Graduate Fellowship. Westmoreland is a member of the American Society for Horticultural Sciences and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society.
