Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education

Sonia Manuel-Dupont joined the USU faculty in 1985 with a triple appointment in English, Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education and Civil and Environmental Engineering. She served as the faculty advisor for groups in each department including English Education, National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association, Society for Women Engineers. Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers, Honors in all 3 departments, and Service Learning coordination for COMD. She was USU’s first Honor’s professor, first President’s Diversity Professor, CEHS Teacher of the years (twice), and USU Carnegie Professor. On campus she has been an active member of the Women and Gender Center, the Honor’s program, Service Learning, the Val R. Christensen Center, Engineers without Borders, and Latinas First. She received her PhD in American Indian Linguistics from the University of Kansas and has worked with the Northern Ute Community as well as 10 other Native American communities in Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona.
