Plants, Soils and Climate

Dr. Jeanette Norton is a professor of Soil Microbiology at USU. She has been a faculty member in the department of Plants, Soils and Climate since 1993. She has mentored more than 15 undergraduate students in soil microbiology and ecology research activities. Many of the students have been involved in a variety of projects related to the ecology and genomics of nitrification and has recently included microbial interactions with rangeland plant communities. Research opportunities in the field and laboratory and Dr. Norton’s ability to write recommendations based on interactions with them have supported several of these students in their applications to graduate and professional schools to pursue advanced degrees. Dr. Norton is committed to broadening participation in the sciences by multicultural students through activities with the SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Native Americans and Chicanos in Sciences) organization. Her role as honors Advisor for the Plant, Soils and Climate Department allows her to interact with other undergraduate researchers through their Honors Thesis and presentation of their efforts at the Student Showcase event. Her philosophy for undergraduate mentoring is that students should have opportunities to be involved in the full spectrum of research activities early in their academic careers.
