Mehmet Soyer joined the Department of Sociology as a visiting assistant professor in June 2017. He will start as an assistant professor in the same department in July 2020. He is an environmental sociologist with an interest in social inequality.

To date, he has mentored dozens of students in hands-on learning outside of the classroom, mentoring one Undergraduate Research Fellow, six URCO grant recipients, two students for PEAK Fellowship, two students for Faculty-Student Fellowship, six students for Undergraduate Travel Award recipients, thirty-three Undergraduate Research Symposium presenters, one Undergraduate Research on Capitol Hill presenter. He has been collaborating with multiple undergraduate students from various disadvantaged group (Women of Color, Native-American, First Generation College Student, Non-Traditional Students, LGBTQ+ Students) on original research, journal article submissions, book reviews, encyclopedia entries, grant proposals and conference presentations.

He has won as SSWA’s Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year for two consecutive years, and this year also won at the CHASS level.
