Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentor of the Year

Craig Palsson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics and Finance. He has published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Economic History and the Journal of Public Economics, and his article in the Journal of Urban Economics is the journal’s most cited piece in the last five years. As an undergraduate, Dr. Palsson published four peer-reviewed papers with his undergraduate mentor, and he came to Utah State hoping to give his students a similar experience. He has three ongoing projects with student coauthors. In 2019, Dr. Palsson co-founded the Economic History Research Group, a group focused on training students, giving them the opportunity to contribute to impactful research, and building their resume to help them land a job or get into a graduate program upon graduation. In the group, eight students were able to make meaningful contributions to research as they prepared for graduate school and professional work. Dr. Palsson has also received an Emergent Ventures grant for $40,000 to create a YouTube channel (Market Power) that changes the way students are introduced to economics. His videos giving advice on majoring in economics and participating in undergraduate research have received over 1.8 million views.
