Societal Impact Resource Center

Advancing Research That Makes a Difference

At Utah State University, we recognize that research extends beyond the lab, library, and studio — it shapes lives, communities, and the world around us. Societal Impacts, sometimes called Broader Impacts, refer to the tangible and lasting ways research contributes to the public good. From improving health outcomes and informing public policy to preserving cultural heritage and fostering innovation, meaningful societal impact takes many forms.

This resource center was created to help USU researchers plan compelling societal impact activities that align with their work — whether as part of a funding application or as a way to share knowledge, creativity, and discoveries with the public. Whether you are applying for a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) fellowship, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) award, or simply seeking to expand the public reach of your work, we offer tools, examples, and guidance to strengthen your societal impact efforts.
