Shared Grading: An Approach to Increase Student Learning and Reduce Grading Burden
Education Efficiency
Abstract
The described approach decreases grading burden and enhances learning experiences by requiring students to grade one another’s work in large classes. Additional interaction with the material allows for greater comprehension of each topic. The accuracy of student-assessed grades can be calibrated by evaluating each grader’s performance for consistency.
What It Is
An educational approach that requires students to grade each other’s work.
Value Proposition
This technique decreases grading burden, allowing reallocation of TA funding and instructor hours, and enhances student learning during their second interaction with each topic.
Applicable Markets
Educational systems, learning management systems, educational software, schools
Benefit
Large university classes often have hundreds of students. Each homework assignment, lab activity, and exam can create an extreme grading burden for class instructors and university-hired teaching assistants. Where teaching assistants grade assignments, this can require a significant portion of the course budgets. When instructors personally grade assignments, this can require a significant portion of their time.
By requiring students to grade each other’s submissions, instructor time and course budgets are saved, allowing for further improvement in other areas. Additionally, interacting with the same assignment a second time allows students to enhance their understanding of course concepts.
