"Sun Haven" Solar Tracker

A reliable, low-cost, mechanical solar tracker that provides optimal shade without the need to adjust throughout the day.

Problem

Traditional umbrellas and shading devices provide optimal shade for only a portion of the day (the evening sun, for example, is generally too low for the umbrellas to be effective). Even adjustable devices are generally awkward and difficult to adjust because they don’t adjust according to the sun’s trajectory.

Solution

The Sun Haven follows the trajectory of the sun throughout the day by mechanically moving along a path based on the geographic location of device and the approximate time of year. The device may be equipped with multiple settings for different times of the year, which the user can alternate between.

Benefits

The device provides optimal shade without the need to manually adjust throughout the day. It can also more efficiently collect solar energy by maintaining an optimal angle with the sun throughout the day.

Applications

Any outdoor settings exposed to sunlight, particularly those where comfort is valued, including patios, cafes, poolsides, picnic tables, etc. When paired with solar panels, it can also serve as a renewable energy collection device.
