Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) Scholarships

The mission of the Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is to advance scientific and defense objectives by researching, developing and characterizing sensor, electronic, and software systems; providing program life-cycle support; and enhancing the education and development of scientists and engineers.

All scholarships are selected by the scholarship committee, which shall include representatives from the Space Dynamics Laboratory, Office of Research, and members from various colleges. All committee members are required to sign the university conflict of interest statement.

Space Dynamics Lab (SDL) Student Scholarship
The scholarship will be awarded to two underrepresented (within that field) students who are studying engineering or computer science. All recipients must demonstrate strong academic achievement, excellence in the quality of their work assignments and performance, and have a financial need. The scholarship is a one-year scholarship.

  • Applicants shall be full-time students (12 or more credit hours per semester) with a major or minor in one of the following departments (Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
  • Up to two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in June for the following academic year.
  • SDL will host an awards luncheon and tour for the recipients at the beginning of fall semester with the intent to build a relationship that could lead to a potential internship and/or student employment at SDL.
  • Rising Undergraduate Freshman or Sophomore who is ready to go into the professional program
  • Academic grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • Financial need
  • Brief statement explaining how the student is underrepresented in their field
  • U.S. Citizen (required for potential internship and/or student employment at SDL)
  • Letter of Recommendation
    • Candidates will be asked to submit the name and email address of a faculty member, post-doctoral researcher, or graduate student to recommend them in the application form. Students should confirm that the recommender is prepared and able to provide a letter for them by April 30, 2024. Upon the student’s submission of their application, the listed recommender will automatically be emailed with further instructions to submit the letter.
    • The letter should include examples of performance, student potential, and any factors that set the candidate apart from other students.

Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) Diversity in Engineering Scholarship
  • Applicants shall be a full-time Utah State University current sophomore or junior students in the College of Engineering or Science.
  • Preference shall be given to students who are members of the Utah State University section of the Society of Women Engineers.
  • Preference shall be given to applicants that have an interest in the space industry or are currently employed at Space Dynamics Laboratory.
  • Applicants shall have an academic grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Preference shall be given to students whose life experiences will promote diversity and increase opportunities for students from historically underserved populations.
  • Preference will be given to students with financial need.
  • Applicants shall submit an essay (<1000 words) outlining their background, interests, and academic achievements such as:
    • How applicant’s life experiences will promote diversity.
    • Applicant’s interest in space science and engineering disciplines.
    • Applicant’s interest or participation in work at Space Dynamics Laboratory.
    • Relevant internships, coursework or projects.
    • Applicant’s participation in undergraduate organizations sponsoring academic experiences for students.

Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) Science and Engineering Scholarship
  • Applicants shall be full-time Utah State University current sophomore or junior students in the College of Engineering or Science, seeking a career in the aerospace industry.
  • Preference shall be given to applicants that have an interest in the space industry or are currently employed at Space Dynamics Laboratory.
  • Applicants shall have an academic grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Preference will be given to students with financial need.

The Lieutenant General James C. King, U.S. Army, Retired and Jeneane Campbell King Scholarship
  • Applicants shall be full-time Utah State University current sophomore or junior students majoring in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science, and seeking a career in Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (“C4ISR”) relevant disciplines.
  • Preference shall be given to applicants that have an interest in national security or are currently employed at Space Dynamics Laboratory.
  • Applicants shall have an academic grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Preference will be given to students with financial need.
