What is Blue Plate Research?
Blue Plate Research brings together state and community decision-makers with premier researchers to explore the health and well-being challenges facing Utah. The presentation events focus on sharing easy-to-understand research with Utah’s health advocates, statewide stakeholders, and the general public.

What does the series offer?
During the event, the presenter will share data-driven discoveries that provide tools and insights to address Utah’s health and well-being challenges. Each event features a live presentation that highlights the researcher and their work, followed by a question-and-answer session. Lunch is provided for all attendees who RSVP.

How can I attend?
Those interested in joining the conversation are encouraged to RSVP. The event series is sponsored by Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah and each event is held at Gallivan Hall in downtown Salt Lake City.

Leading the Charge: How USU's Institute for Disability Research is Advancing Disability Research and Policy in Utah

April 21st | 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Gallivan Hall in Salt Lake City

For individuals and families, navigating the complex world of disability systems and
services can feel overwhelming, confusing, or impossible to access. Yet, disability is a
part of everyday life — more than a quarter of Utahns meet the federal definition of
having a disability. This Blue Plate Research event will introduce a statewide resource
designed to help: the Institute for Disability Research, Policy & Practice (IDRPP) at Utah
State University.

Dr. Matthew Wappett, the institute's Executive Director, will lead the conversation by
tracing the evolution of disability services in America, from the early institutions that
were once central to public life to the landmark legislation and community-based
movements that shape how support is delivered today, and what that history reveals
about where gaps still exist in Utah.

As Utah's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, IDRPP has been
at the forefront of disability services since 1972. Its mission is to connect research with
real-world needs so that evidence-based practices can reach the people who need
them. Dr. Wappett will share examples of that work in action, including early intervention
services for infants and toddlers, assistive technology programs, mental health training
across the state, and long-term research on child development and disability.

Join us on April 21st, 11:30 a.m. at Gallivan Hall in Salt Lake City for a live presentation
and Q&A as part of the Blue Plate Research Event Series. The event is free and open to
the public and will include a live Q&A session following the presentation.
