Preston Smith

Biography

Preston Smith joined Utah State University in 2026 as a Technology Commercialization Manager overseeing the life sciences portfolio. He partners with faculty to evaluate new discoveries, protect intellectual property, and develop commercialization strategies including licensing, startup formation, and industry partnerships. His work focuses on translating scientific innovation into real-world impact. Prior to joining the university, Preston worked in translational oncology research and business development at a clinical-stage biotechnology startup, where he supported in-licensing strategy and led cross-functional development initiatives. He has also supported early-stage healthcare startups through nonprofit accelerator programming and angel investing activities, advising founders on commercialization strategy and investment readiness. Preston earned his MBA with an emphasis in Business Analytics from the University of Utah and holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from Brigham Young University. He is passionate about helping researchers bring breakthrough science from the lab to the marketplace.
