The Office of Research is promoting opportunities to help USU's cadre of high-achieving researchers continue their quest for discovery. To promote engagement around societally important research area affecting Utah, the nation and world, the Office of Research will be hosting a series of Research Summits for researchers wanting to build relationships across campus on these key topic areas.

This event was held on January 25, 2024, at the Maverick Stadium Champions Club (3rd Floor) on Energy and the Energy Transition:

  • An overview of energy-related external funding opportunities
  • A panel of USU and industry representatives focused on energy innovation
  • An opportunity for networking to explore forming research teams

DOE Mixed Algae Conversion Research Opportunity (MACRO) (DE-FOA-0003276) This FOA will support BETO’s research and development (R&D) priorities in the Conversion Technologies Program and FECM’s R&D priorities in the Carbon Dioxide Conversion Program. BETO’s Conversion Technologies Program supports R&D in technologies for converting biomass feedstocks into finished liquid transportation fuels—such as renewable gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel along with co-products or chemical intermediates. DOE Concentrating Solar Flux to Heat and Power (DE-FOA-0003338) SETO anticipates that the FOA will seek RD&D projects in three topic areas. Technologies in each area may support a variety of concentrating solar-thermal (CST) forms including CSP, SIPH, and high-temperature solar-thermal reactors. Each topic area focuses on scaling and maturing impactful technologies for specified CST subsystems. TBD
DOE Notice of Intent related to Regional Scale Collaboration to Facilitate a Domestic Critical Minerals Future: Carbon Ore, Rare Earth, and Critical Minerals (CORE-CM) Initiative (DE-FOA-0003076) The purpose of the anticipated DE-FOA-0003077 is to continue the work of the Carbon Ore, Rare Earth, and Critical Minerals (CORE-CM) Initiative basinal assessment and development of CMM supply chains from unconventional and secondary feedstocks to produce rare earth elements (REEs), critical minerals (CMs), and novel, high-value, nonfuel, carbon-based products (CBPs) as part of the next generation of domestic U.S. materials. DOE Notice of Intent to Issue Funding Opportunity Announcement DE-FOA-0003183 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), Provision 41007(b)(1), Aerodynamics for Offshore Wind Performance and Reliability The intended FOA would seek applications to fill a critical void in the development of multi-megawatt wind turbines for offshore deployment. Modern offshore wind turbines are the largest rotating machines ever built by humankind. Existing aerodynamic design tools and analysis methods are not well validated for machines of this scale, placing the cost of development and performance expectations from these designs at significant risk. The FOA would support the necessary data and analysis to validate tools used in the design and development of large wind turbine rotors (>10MW) and facilitate the accelerated development and deployment of cost-effective, reliable offshore wind technology.
