Biological Safety

USU’s biological safety program provides oversight and coordination for the safe use of human and animal pathogens, biological toxins, human blood and recombinant DNA on campus. This involves monitoring laboratory safety practices, providing training and information, picking up biohazardous waste for safe disposal, and advising researchers about pertinent regulatory guidelines and required permits.

The EHS Office has staff on the Biohazards Committee and Institutional Biosafety/Recombinant DNA Committee and is involved in ensuring pathogenic organisms are handled in a controlled environment by competent personnel. The EHS Office is always available to assist with questions or concerns relating to biosafety.

Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Protocol Registration
If you are a researcher conducting studies involving recombinant DNA or other hazardous biological agents, it is important to ensure that your work is conducted safely and in compliance with regulations. Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Protocol Registration is the process by which you can submit your research protocol to the IBC for review and approval.

Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL)
The BMBL should be used as a tool in the assessment and proposed mitigation steps in biomedical and clinical laboratories.

Laboratory biosafety manual, 4th edition
The WHO Laboratory Biosafety Manual (LBM) has been in broad use at all levels of clinical and public health laboratories, and other biomedical sectors globally, serving as a de facto global standard that presents best practices and sets trends in biosafety.

Federal Select Agent Program
The Federal Select Agent Program is jointly comprised of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Division of Select Agents and Toxins and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service/Division of Agricultural Select Agents and Toxins.
