Rules for Students Participating in the Horizon Competition

Team Formation

  • Teams must consist of 3-6 undergraduate students from Utah State University.
  • Interdisciplinary teams are required.
  • Teams must register by October 31st, 2024.
  • Final changes to team rosters must be made by February 15th, 2025.

Eligibility

  • All team members must be enrolled as undergraduate students at Utah State University for the duration of the competition.
  • At least one member of each team must be a in their first year of undergraduate study at USU.
  • Students can only be a member of one team.

Project Originality

  • All submitted work must be original and created specifically for this competition.
  • Plagiarism or the use of pre-existing projects is strictly prohibited.

Mentor Interaction

  • Teams are encouraged to work with their assigned mentor but must not rely on the mentor for direct contributions to their project.

Deadlines

  • Teams must adhere to all competition deadlines for registration, submissions, and presentations.
  • Late submissions may result in point deductions or disqualification.

Ethical Considerations

  • All research and proposed solutions must adhere to ethical standards and university guidelines. For further guidance teams are encouraged to engage with their mentor or with the competition staff on your@usu.edu.

Confidentiality

  • Teams must not share other teams' ideas or strategies they may become aware of during the competition.

Presentations

  • All team members must participate in the final presentation.
  • Presentations must adhere to the 10-minute time limit.

External Help

  • While teams can consult external experts for information their contributions must be acknowledged and the work submitted must be entirely that of the team members.

Intellectual Property

  • Any intellectual property developed during the competition remains the property of the student creators, subject to university policies.

Code of Conduct

  • All participants must adhere to Utah State University's student code of conduct throughout the competition.

Disqualification

  • Violation of any of these rules may result in disqualification from the competition.
