Export-Controlled Biologics

Controlled Biologics & Chemicals

The two main bodies of export control regulations, ITAR and EAR, restrict the international transfer of certain biologics (bacteria, fungi, toxins, or viruses) and chemicals. A list of restricted biologics and chemicals can be found below. These restrictions are imposed for national security and safety reasons. USU personnel must ensure their use or transfer of restricted biologics or chemicals complies with applicable regulatory requirements.

Shipping Restricted Biologics or Chemicals Internationally

If you wish ship biologics or chemicals from the list below internationally, please complete the USU International Shipment Review Form, which allows the Research Integrity & Compliance (RIC) office to review the transaction, and determine if a license from the U.S. State or Commerce Departments is required prior to shipping to the intended recipient.

Obtaining Restricted Biologics and Chemicals

If you wish to obtain biologics or chemicals found on the list below for your research, please contact the USU Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), who will coordinate with RIC to determine what requirements must be met to house the biologic or chemical on campus.
