Research Security Training

Complete the 1-hour long Research Security Training in Learn Blue

Review Federal Funding Agencies' Resesarch Security Requirements

USU maintains and periodically updates a summary of federal research security requirements from agencies that currently include NSF, NIH, USDA, DOE, and NASA.

Research Security Training

In 2024 the National Science Foundation (NSF) released its four-part Research Security Training to comply with expected federal regulations and sponsor agency requirements for funding.

USU has adopted a shorter version of this training, developed by the NSF-sponsored SECURE Center, which is available in Learn Blue and takes roughly 1 hour to complete.

Who is Required to Take Research Security Training

USU researchers must generally take Research Security Training if they are seeking funding or on an active award from the following agencies:

  • National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH)
  • Department of Agriculture (USDA)
  • Department of Energy (DOE)
  • NASA

Visit  USU's Federal Research Security Requirements page for details on these agency-level requirements.

How to Complete Research Security Training

USU Personnel

You can access the Research Security Training in Learn Blue by searching “Research Security Training” in the course catalog. Covered individuals at USU are expected to take the version of the training offered in Learn Blue, where the Office of Research will verify you have completed the training.

Non-USU Personnel

Covered individuals working outside of USU but who are collaborators or subawardees on USU-led projects or proposals with a Research Security Training requirement will not have access Learn Blue and must complete:

  1. NSF’s Consolidated Training Module (CTM) for Individual Users;
  2. A research security training in their own institution’s learning suite based on NSF’s CTM;
  3. CITI Program’s 1-hour Research Security Training (Combined), based on NSF’s CTM; or
  4. CITI Program’s 4-hour Research Security Training.

After the outside collaborator or subawardees has completed one of these trainings, the project’s USU PI will attach proof (a screenshot will be sufficient) that the outside individual completed the training to their project proposal in Kuali. The USU PI must submit this proof before USU submits the proposal to the sponsor.
