Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP)                      CHP Checklist     CHP Template

All laboratories which use chemicals are subject to the OSHA standard 29CFR1910.1450, titled “Occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals in laboratories”, commonly referred to as “The Lab Standard”. The Lab Standard requires the development of a Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) that is laboratory specific.

According to The Lab Standard, the CHP shall be capable of:
· Protecting employees from health hazards associated with hazardous chemicals in the laboratory.
· Keeping exposures below Permissible Exposure Limits (29CFR1910, subpart Z)
· Readily available to employees

Each Principal Investigator (PI) is responsible to develop and maintain the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) for their laboratory. In broad terms, a CHP is a detailed strategy for controlling hazards in a given location. A lab's CHP should identify all the hazards present in that lab and describe specific measures for effectively controlling those hazards.
